Iran failed to get the result they needed to qualify for the second round as they were comfortably dispatched by Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1.They fell behind early to a great strike from Edin Dzeko,
but thereafter enjoyed most of the possession and created several
chances themselves, hitting the bar immediately after conceding. But Carlos Queiroz's men could not find a way through, and Miralem Pjanic
added a second as Bosnia played on the counter.
Iran did manage to
avoid becoming the only team in the tournament to fail to score a goal
thanks to Reza Ghoochannejad, but the slim hope given to them by the
goal was quickly erased by a strike from Vrsajevic just a minute later.Iran
were not really expected to do much in the tournament, and although
they played very negatively in all of their games - until falling behind
here - they did exceed expectations and were unlucky to only pick up
one point from their games against Argentina and Nigeria. But it is now Nigeria who will go through into the knockout stages, where they will likely face off against France. For Bosnia, the tournament may represent something of a missed opportunity, but with the likes of Sead Kolasinac and Muhamed Besic looking sharp, they can be assured of a bright future
