World number one Serena Williams began her defense of her WTA Finals crown with a 6-4 6-4 win over Ana Ivanovic. Ivanovic came back in the opening set from 4-1 to level 4-4 before Williams broke again. Williams once more broke the game at 5-4 in the second to seal victory.
