Benfica fans throw flares, urinate and spit on Atletico Madrid fans

Tonight’s Champions League match between Atleti and Benfica was stopped for several minutes after Benfica fans, located in the first and second upper tiers of the North Stand, threw flares. Benfica fans threw the objects after Argentinean Gaitán scored Benfica’s opening goal, to level the match at 1-1 in the 36th minute. Continue reading after the cut
Some of the flares failed to reach the pitch and fell onto the seats in the lower tier. One of them fell onto the seat of a two year old Atleti fan, who was lucky not to be injured. Some fans however did have to be treated for mild burns.
In addition to the flares some fans were seen urinating and spitting onto the Atleti supporters in the lower section of the stand. Italian referee Gianluca Rocch waited several minutes to restart the game after the Benfica goal to allow the smoke from the flares to clear from the stands and ensure order had been restored.
