Chelsea on Tuesday announced the capture of striker Diego Costa from the Spanish club and he will be joined by another hero of the Liga-winning side, should Luis satisfactorily complete a medical and agree personal terms. Reports suggest Chelsea have agreed to pay £20 million for the defender, having spent £32m on Costa.
The
club said in a statement: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm an
agreement has been reached with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of
Filipe Luis. The move is subject to the 28-year-old left-back agreeing
personal terms.
Luis, who was not named in Brazil’s
World Cup squad but impressed greatly as Atletico won La Liga and reached
the final of the Champions League last season, informed the club at the
end of the campaign that he wished to leave. He spent four years at the Vicente Calderon having joined the club from Deportivo La Coruna.
The 28-year-old replaces Ashley Cole in the Chelsea squad following his free transfer move to Roma and is expected to dislodge Cesar Azpilicueta, a right-back switched to the left, from the first XI at Stamford Bridge.Jorge Ordas, Eurosport Spain: "Filipe Luis is a
really interesting player.
He’s really fast and he likes to attack a
lot. You often see him going into the opposite box, but it doesn’t mean
he’s a bad defender. He has an amazing physical form and he can run lots
of kilometers in every game.
"He
has been one of the best left wing-backs in La Liga in the last four to
five years.
When he was a Deportivo player he suffered a severe injury
in his ankle and he couldn’t play for five or six months. Before that
incident a lot of big teams in Europe were looking him but he decided to
sign for Atletico and recover."He
played for four years with Atletico and he was a fans' favourite,
although that will change that after this transfer. He’s a good
team-mate and I think he will be very useful for Chelsea."
