Everton have smashed their transfer record by completing the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea for £28 million. Lukaku had been expected to join up with Jose Mourinho's side on Wednesday afternoon but he instead flew to England from Belgium to sign a five-year, £75,000- a week deal with the Toffees.
Lukaku said:
"I am very pleased to play again for such a wonderful club with the manager and the players. Last year was a very good year and I had a feeling this was the best place to come develop as a young man and a footballer. Martinez was very influential. He is someone who knows football.
He can help me develop as a player. I want to develop and become one of the best and he wants to make our team one of the best in England. I told them very quickly that I wanted to play for this club again and the rest was just settled by the board. I want to help my team-mates to become a better team. It was a good step for me - I am 21 years of age and I wanted to play for a good team. I needed to be in a place that felt right. Here I have the confidence of the technical staff and the support of the fans. I have a very good relationship with the players and the fans. For me, this is the place that I belong. I want to grow here. We want to become one of the best teams in England. We want to reach the to four. Last year we were very close and we want to push on again. I don't have hard feelings against Chelsea football club. They gave me the opportunity to come to England. Without them I wouldn't be here so I thank them as well. If I want to win titles I have to get better. As a young player you always need to improve yourself every day and be ambitious and we have the environment here to do that."Why Lukaku and not Torres?
