The Dutch World Cup star has already agreed terms and will undergo his medical in Rome on Tuesday morning. “We
welcome with joy the best defender at the World Cup. He is an
international-level signing,” said Lazio spokesman Stefano De Martino.
The deal is believed to be worth €9m and the Biancocelesti won out despite interest from Manchester United. De Vrij had an astounding World Cup with the Netherlands and the 22-year-old attracted admiring glances from around Europe.
When
initial talks of a Lazio move seemed to break down, it had been
suggested that he was ready to link-up with his former international
boss Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.
Instead
though he has resurrected his move to the Serie A club and United will
now have to look elsewhere as they look to replace Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at the club.
The likes of Mats Hummels, Thomas Vermaelen and De Vrij's international team-mate Ron Vlaar have all been linked with United but as yet they have not signed a centre-back in the transfer window.
