Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position for the Italian Grand Prix, as both Ferraris edged his team-mate Nico Rosberg to deny the Mercedes Formula 1 team a front row lockout. Hamilton used Mercedes latest 'development' F1 engine to good effect to take pole by 0.234s from Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen at Monza.
The reigning world champion failed to improve on his 1m23.397s on his second run, but both efforts were good enough for top spot. Raikkonen edged out Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel by just 0.054s on his final run to be best of the Scuderia's two drivers in front of its home crowd. Running Ferrari's newly upgraded power unit, they were less than a tenth quicker than Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate Rosberg.
Rosberg noticed a "strange oscillation" with his new Mercedes engine in final free practice, so the team reverted to the less powerful spec used in the previous race at Spa. The lack of horsepower told as he trailed team-mate Hamilton by 0.306s.
