Dominic Thiem defeated Lu Yen-Hsun 6-3 6-3 in the first round of the Shanghai Masters. Games went by the way of serve early in the first set, but it was Thiem who broke serve to take a 4-3 lead, and despite Lu saving three break points, the Austrian was able to take the set in China.
After going a set down, Lu struggled to cause a threat and he lost serve in the fourth game to give Thiem a comfortable 3-1 lead in the second set. Lu showed some fight as the set went on, creating two break-point opportunities, but he failed to take them as Thiem wrapped up the match and gained a place in the next round.
Thiem wil either face Andrey Kuznetsov or Feliciano Lopez in the second round.
