UEFA have announced that players will have their yellow cards wiped after the quarter-stages in Champions league and Europa leagues. That players will no longer miss the Champions League and Europa League finals after UEFA changed the rules on yellow cards.
Xabi Alonso, who was suspended for the Champions final in May after picking up a third knock-out phase booking in the second leg of his team's semi final is the last player to miss the a Champions League final for yellow card accumulation. read the statement after the cut
The European governing body released a statement which stated:
Following a recommendation by the UEFA Club Competitions Committee - in order to implement in UEFA club competitions a rule which is already in force in the UEFA European Football Championship - the Emergency Panel decided that, as of this season,, all yellow cards from the beginning of the group stage will expire on completion of the quarter-finals, booking will therefore not be carried forward to the semi-finals."The rule is already in force in the International area during the European Championships.
