Pirlo, who became the first MLS player to feature for Italy in a 1-0 victory over Malta this week, was criticized for his sluggish performance. And when asked about Pirlo's performance, Juventus director Beppe Marotta said retirement from the national team is a decision Pirlo must make. In Marotta's word:
"I think every player should understand when the moment has come to hang up his boots. I don’t know if that moment has already arrived for him. Certainly, it’s a decision he must make."
