The official Benfica website published an official statement late last night apologizing for the behavior of a section of the travelling support who threw flares into an area of the Calderon stadium full of Atletico fans (read here) .
Benfica president, Luis Filipe Vieira, also added a personal message skating:
"I have mixed emotions, happiness and disappointment.
"Certain things are difficult for us to control. Sadly a small group of trouble-makers has tarnished the good name of Benfica, just as the players honored the playing shirt and made us all proud after the win in Madrid".
The statement continued stating: "We have won nothing and we now need to focus on the league game against União.Madiera but with a shadow of sadness after these incidents".
The message closed with the club thanking the majority of the travelling supporters who cheered the team non-stop at the Vicente Calderón. "Thanks to the silent majority who are always there to help the team"
